Ignoring the world in Dali

Enter Dali!

The impressive Imperial gates at the N, S, E, and West entrances to the old city, in the West of the Yunnan Province, used to declare the importance of the place, the domain of power, a seat of religious importance. They were there to empower those within, and to keep the masses out.

Today, however, these gates serve to welcome the floods of tourists, foreign and domestic, to one of the first places in China, here at the steps of the Himalayas, to become a real backpacker mecca after the country first opened up to the outside world.
